How It Works

Millions of times a second the Soo-Soft system varies a complex group of electrical signals that alter the physical chemistry of water. A cascading chain reaction reduces the long chains of hard calcium into a fine calcium aragonite powder. With a particle size of only 4 microns (156 millionths of an inch), the soft calcium in water groups itself into soft snowflake-like shapes. Spaces appear between these groups and allow the water to become an improved carrier for minerals, nutrients and for the formations of suds from detergents. This calcium powder is so fine that it becomes six times more dissolvable into the water itself. The extremely small size of the calcium particle creates another advantage. Heat, pressure changes, and evaporation will not cause the particle to revert and form hard lime scale. Since the Soo-Soft system is always processing the water, new lime scale formation is always being prevented from forming.

The surface tension of the water is also reduced by this conversion to a soft form. This increases the solubility of the water making it an even better solvent. In addition, the electrical charge of the water and minerals suspended in it are altered so calcium will not adhere to surfaces.

The end result of all these physical water modifications is that all pipes, filters, pumps, appliances, etc. will discharge their existing calcium deposits over the initial period of 90 days and cease to return.

The effects "downstream' of the Soo-Soft unit are profound. After an initial 90-day period of de-scaling, ice machines, coffee makers, steam tables, steam ovens and other appliances no longer clog with deposits. The grief of calcium deposits in equipment is over. Lime scale no longer forms in sinks, toilets, and bathtubs. The effectiveness of soaps, detergents and other chemical agents used for cleaning increases as much as 60%. Housekeeping labor is then reduced with the absence of lime scale deposits.

Improved Water Solvency

The Soo-Soft system reduces minerals in water to a microscopic size. They then dissolve much easier into the water. This reduces the surface tension of the water so that it becomes Wetter and has an increased ability to dissolve soaps and detergents. The treated water also has an increased ability as a rinsing agent and provides cleaner rinse of soaps and detergents. This creates the Squeaky Clean effect when hair is rinsed.

Dissolves Lime Scale Deposits

The increased solvency of the water is improved to the point that it will dissolve existing deposits of lime scale. This occurs throughout the plumbing system and all appliances that are connected to it. In home, commercial and industrial environments water will act to clear mineral deposits and prevent their return.

Soft & Silky Water

Water with large mineral concentrations is abrasive. It is a skin irritant when washing and shaving and acts as an abrasive in pools and spas. In equipment that uses water, it can wear out pumps, spray heads, and anything through which water travels. The treated water of the Soo-Soft system has the minerals reduced to the consistency of a fine talcum powder. It no longer acts as an irritant to skin nor as an abrasive. It will greatly extend the life of all equipment that uses water.

Softer Clothes

Lime scale will adhere to the fabric of clothes, towels and sheets making them harder and preventing detergents and fabric softeners from entering the fibers. This not only makes the fabric stiff and irritating, but also will wear them out faster in the wash. The Soo-Soft system will dissolve hard deposits in the fabric, allow softeners to work better, and reduce irritations.

Softer Hair & Skin

Hard water will form scale on both hair and skin. Over time, hair will develop a crusty scale that will make it stiff. In addition, it will be difficult for shampoo and conditioners to penetrate the shaft of the hair. In time, the water from the Soo-Soft system will dissolve the scale on the hair shaft and the hair will become softer and more manageable. The same effect will occur on skin.

Health benefits of electronic water softening vs. salt-based systems and relative medical research studies

Salt-water softening systems remove both calcium and magnesium from the water and replace it with salt. When these two minerals are removed, one of the largest sources in the human diet is gone. The biological importance of these two minerals for human health cannot be over emphasized.

Increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, colorectal cancer, kidney stones, stroke, vascular disease as well as other neural diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease have been linked to low levels of calcium and magnesium. Further, both calcium and magnesium bind to the same sites as many toxic elements such as lead and cadmium. When the calcium and magnesium fills these locations, the sites no longer absorb the lead and cadmium, and their toxic effects on the body are greatly reduced.

Calcium is a calming mineral to the body and decreases neuromuscular excitability as well as hypertension. This is the reason a glass of warm milk works as a sleep aid.

Higher risks are reported across the world for drinking water, which is low in levels of calcium and magnesium.

Frantisek Kozisek, MD. Ph.D. of the National Institute of Public Health (Czech) outlines the importance of these two minerals in great detail in a thesis on the heath significance of

drinking water with

Calcium deposits itself on all metallic surfaces. Wherever hot water is involved the deposits occur much faster. Calcium also acts like an insulator, trapping heat which destroys heating elements, clogs pumps, and plugs nozzles in all commercial applications that use water.

Calcium Deposits Cost Money!

The Soo-SoftDissolve the hard calcium deposits in the entire plumbing system and prevent their return!

The greatest costs in a commercial environment are DOWNTIME and MAINTANENCE.

  • Commercial Coffee Machines ($800-$2,200) and cappuccino makers ($2000-$20,000) can have their constant cleaning eliminated as well as having their lives extended for years by the removal calcium deposits.

  • Steam Ovens ($5,000 & up) are notorious for constant maintenance and downtime in hard water conditions. Calcium deposits greatly increase their consumption of energy as well as shorten their lifespan.

  • Steam Tables require weekly and sometimes daily maintenance in a commercial kitchen. The small tubes of the heat exchanger clog with calcium and coat the surfaces of the table itself. This necessitates constant housekeeping as well as regular maintenance.

  • Water Heaters require regular replacement due to calcium deposits. A scale of inch will add 40% to energy costs for a typical water heater. Regular replacement cost can be thousands of dollars.

  • Ice machines require replacement very quickly due to calcium deposits. Replacements costs vary from $3,000 to as much as $10,000.

  • Reverse Osmosis Filters require frequent replacement of membranes from calcium deposits. These costs can add up to thousands of dollars per year in a fast food restaurant

  • Plumbing Systems become clogged with calcium deposits and pipes eventually have to be replaced. Over a period of years these costs can escalate into tens of thousands of dollars. This is addition to the Downtime required to repair the plumbing!

Salt Systems Comparisons

  • Incomplete Salt systems are not efficient. They do not remove all of the calcium from the water. The remaining hard calcium is left to contaminate the plumbing system and appliances.

  • Costs aside from the high initial cost of installing a salt system, the cost of the salt itself can be expensive as well as labor intensive. The cost of salt can range from $200 per year for a small home to thousands of dollars per year for a car wash or industrial facility. The more water being used the more salt that is required. The regular maintenance required for salt systems also adds to their overall cost.

The healthy growth of plants and animals is what allows human life to flourish. We are dependant upon our environment.  The quality of the air we breathe, and the food that we eat is to a great extent determined by the health of our water and air supply. These elements in turn affect the plants, trees, and animals that we need in order to exist. How we treat our environment has a profound effect on the quality of our life and the future of our planet.

Environmentally Friendly

Ordinary methods of softening water use salt to remove calcium from the water. This salt is harmful to the environment. The salt brine discharged from these units is dumped into rivers, lakes and streams without treatment by municipal waste facilities. There is no practical or inexpensive way to remove these salts during waste treatment. Plants, fish and animals are forced to suffer from the caustic residues of salt. Sodium chloride significantly reduces all aspects of plant growth. Root and shoot growth are reduced and tip burn is increased. Crops such as strawberries, lettuce, and avocados are especially sensitive to salt content in their irrigation water.

Salt accumulation in our lakes, rivers, and streams affects all varieties of living things. These make it though the food chain and eventually arrive in our food. In the end we humans consume ten times the amount of salt needed for our survival.

It comes as no surprise that salt is invading wilderness areas from the Florida everglades to the California coastal waterways. Although many governmental agencies are passing legislation against salt softening systems, opposition against this type of legislation is intense. The cost of the lawsuits involved makes it difficult for all but the largest municipalities to afford such legislation. The end result for the earth is that billions of pounds of salt are dumped into the environment per year.

In contrast to other water softening systems, the Soo-Soft digital water softener helps living things grow. Green plants of all kinds grow better under the influence of our chemical free water treatment. In areas where there is a natural salt content to the soil, a dramatic increase in crop yields has been reported. In other areas, the absence of hard calcium crystals in the water helps nutrients find their way to the furthest reaches of the plants cellular system.

INSTALLATION

Installation procedures for Soo-Soft

Unlike conventional salt-based water softeners, the Soo-Soft

COPPER OR PVC PIPE

This unit is only intended for use with copper or PVC pipe. The Soo-Soft

MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEMS:

LOCATION OF COIL

Locate the water line coming into the home. This is usually at the location of the water meter. Find a section of pipe just after the water meter (about 8 inches long) that can be wrapped with the coil. It does not matter whether the pipe is horizontal or vertical.

If the water meter is located outside of the home and the incoming pipe in concealed inside of a wall you can wrap the pipe that is outside of the home and bring the wires into the house for attachment to the control unit. Only a very small hole is required that can be sealed with conventional caulk.

The control unit can be mounted outside if it is installed into a NEMA type weatherproof enclosure. These are available at an electrical supply and some remodeling stores that sell electrical supplies. The wires can then be routed through holes in the bottom of the NEMA box. The box should be at least three times larger than the control unit to allow for heat dissipation. THE CONTROL UNIT IS NOT WATERPROOF AND SHOULD BE PROTECTED FROM THE ELEMENTS.

The coil should be located at least 3 ft from electric motors or high voltage electrical lines to prevent interference with the operation of the coil. High voltage lines are located near electrical panels. A larger field can disrupt the electromagnetic field of the coil and reduce its effectiveness.

WELL WATER SYSTEMS:

LOCATION OF COIL

The coil can be wrapped around a copper or PVC pipe as it leaves the surge tank. Do not locate the coil within three feet of the pump. The coil should be located at least 3 ft from electric motors or high voltage electrical lines to prevent interference with the operation of the coil. A larger field can disrupt the electromagnetic field of the coil and reduce its effectiveness. Also, if there is too much turbulence in the pipe the coil will not be able to operate correctly. The output of the well, surge tank, or a foot or so from the output of the pump will work fine.

IF YOU HAVE A SALT-TYPE WATER SOFTENER

The salt water softener should be by-passed. If it is left in the system, the Soo-Soft water softener will remove all the stored calcium and put it into your system. If you must use the existing system for iron filter etc. then install the coil for the Soo-Soft conditioner after the existing salt water softener, to eliminate the de-scaling of the old unit. It is recommended that you eventually remove the salt-type unit from the system or the resin beads from the unit. This is for both water taste and the health benefits of calcium and magnesium.

As salt based softeners do not de-scale pipes, you may find that a great deal of calcium is released initially. The water heater should be drained on a monthly basis during this time to eliminate the scale that has accumulated in the system.

WINDING THE COIL

Mount the control unit first. It can be mounted either on a wall or ceiling using the supplied screws or in drywall using the supplied plastic wall anchors. The control box should be mounted no farther than 4 feet from where you intend to wind the coil over the pipe.

Diagram A

The wire for the coil has been provided on a spool. Do not "unwind" all of the wire from the spool. It is much easier to wind the coil directly from the spool.

The residential model has been supplied with 50 feet of wire on a spool. This is enough to wrap a 1- inch pipe and attach to the control unit. Commercial units are supplied with enough wire to wrap a 1 or 2-inch pipe. Included in the package are several wire wraps to aid in wrapping the coil.

Do not cut the wire until after you have completed the coil and brought the end of the wire to the control unit. Begin by unrolling 4 feet or 5 feet of wire from the spool. Take one of the wire wraps and attach the wire to the pipe at the point where you intend to begin the coil. See diagram "B" below. Pass the coil of wire around and around the pipe as shown in the illustration, so that each wire touches the next.

Diagram B

When you have completed about 5 to 5&1/2 inches of coil, stop, and then continue winding the coil back in the direction of where you started. See diagram "C" below.

Diagram C

Wind the second coil on top of the first. When this is complete install another wire wrap at the end of the pipe where you started. The coil is now complete. See diagram "D" below.

Diagram D

Unwind the balance of the wire from the spool and take BOTH wires, the one you used to start the coil and the one at the end of the coil (the remainder of the spool) and bring them over to where the control unit is mounted.

Bring the wires from the control box, cut both wires to length, leaving them long enough to attach to the control unit. Then strip the insulation for about inch at the end and insert them into the connectors by holding down on the spring clip and inserting the bare end of the wire into the hole on the clip. Release the connector and the spring clip should now hold the bare section of the wire firmly.

Take the wall transformer and insert the round connector into the control unit. Install the wall transformer into a wall outlet or extension cord. The light on the control unit should now start flashing GREEN indicating that it is working correctly. The installation is now finished.

If the unit should flash RED or not light at all, see the instructions below.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Condition: NO LIGHT AT ALL

Diagram E

Check to see if the outlet that the unit is plugged into has power. Be certain that the outlet it is not controlled by a switch. Plugging a lamp or other device into the outlet can test this. The Soo-Soft unit must be left on at all times.

Condition: FLASHING RED LIGHT

Diagram F

Be sure that the wires have been inserted into the hole above the spring clip that is used to hold the wire. Do not install the wires under the spring clip itself.

Check that the coil wire has not been cut. It should be one continuous piece of wire from the beginning of the coil to the end.

Check that the insulation has been removed from the ends of the wire where they enter the connector on the control unit. The wire should have bare copper at the end where it goes into the hole on the connector of the control unit.

Check to see that the two bare wires are not touching each other as they enter the control unit.
